Intuitive IoT Machine Learning

Since the Falkonry Service was released, numerous users across several industries have used it to understand their #IoT data and recognize conditions. Their objectives are to prevent undesirable outcomes such as failures and low performance/yields. These industries range from power generation and transportation to agriculture, and building management to automotive and steel production. Our users are mostly non-data scientists and seek a solution that they can create and manage. At times, data scientists prefer Falkonry since it can do one thing really well – provide visibility of conditions without much effort.

Falkonry Service–now it’s easier

Taking into account all of the feedback we received from our users, we have redesigned the Falkonry Service to be simpler and yet more powerful. You can more easily work with many things, assessments, and conditions. This new User Interface has been rolled out to all users. Here’s an overview of this new design.

By distilling the raw information down to a one-dimensional timeline, Falkonry simplifies understanding of high speed, multivariate IoT data. The main design improvement in the updated UI is that you can understand Falkonry’s findings, at a macro level, instantly and drill down in terms of time and things easily. As you can see in the design, there’s the ability to compare the performance of two or more things side by side. Simultaneous visualization of conditions across things means that conditions can be interpreted comparatively.

Secondly, both live monitoring and learning views are designed to be analogous, which makes it easier to understand both. The seamless transition from learning to monitoring also means that users can drill-in from high level summary of conditions across an entire fleet, to a single individual thing for a particular period in time where a certain condition arises.

One thing that did not change is that it is just as easy to learn new predictive models without knowing data science or programming. Users can still easily annotate Falkonry’s findings and confirm the conditions visually, as well as in bulk through files.

Next, menus have been simplified so that our users can easily find the pipelines they work with to manage their account. The menu is always to the left and can easily be expanded or collapsed.

Finally, Falkonry’s machine learning continues to improve and find more interesting behavior on its own. As many of our users have told us, Falkonry’s unsupervised machine learning is the best thing to happen to IoT, and we have been working to make it even better. For example, Falkonry figures out from the data what patterns repeat and at what interval so that any periodicity is automatically spotted without the need to give hints or tweak anything.

We continue to make this intuitive experience of IoT data analytics and visualization even more powerful and usable. Even as our technology improves and the Falkonry Service is upgraded, you can be assured that your data and prediction models will be just a click away.

Falkonry’s advanced analytics and simple visualization means that computers are left to do what they are good at – computation – and people can control what the computations do without having to perform detailed debugging or adjustments. There should be no reason for people to pore over hundreds of plots constantly looking for patterns when such work can be efficiently and effectively performed by computers using Falkonry Condition Prediction Service.

This post from Deloitte University, first published in February of 2016, discusses ‘data as the new oil.’ It’s a great article that underscores the significance that data can contribute to an organization’s agility and ultimately, competitive position in the market.  It also, as they state, is the foundation to the digital transformation that industry is now undergoing.

Think back just a few years if you are in manufacturing.  The #cloud, #Internet of Things, even #virtualization were far-off concepts that had little to no relevance in your world. Your goals–keeping your operations running efficiently, avoiding downtime and unexpected conditions–were paramount to your GMP (good manufacturing practices) and digitization mostly meant taking real-time process data from a DCS (Distributed Control System) or PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and using it with a data historian for process control.  The influx of applications such as enterprise manufacturing intelligence, dashboards, and other ‘big data’ systems brought a step change to the way you understood your operations, and the cause/effect of events.   Being able to now isolate, or predict, events was huge, and data (and the effective use of it) was the reason for this efficiency.

Now, another step change is occurring. Advanced techniques such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition offer insights into behavior of the assets, people and processes.  Data becomes not only oil, it’s gold.  It’s the key to your understanding and efficiency.

It allows the automation of large-scale condition detection that previously required a massive human effort and cost to implement. #AI: In a separate study, Markets and Markets forecasts the artificial intelligence (AI) market to be worth $16.06 Billion by 2022, growing at a CAGR of 62.9% from 2016 to 2022. When designing a complex product that has all the bells and whistles under the hood, it is imperative that the user experience be all the more simplistic, streamlined and intuitive.

As any product evolves to encompass new ideas and optimizations, there is a tendency to display the prowess of your algorithmic horsepower to your users by giving them YAF (Yet Another Feature). This is all dandy for developers that have an exploding cache of Github repos and code checkins as they try their one upmanship on their colleagues with cumulative pull requests. But this is often a nightmare for customers who are asymptotically approaching their steady state of product usage and now have to deal with YAF – when they never really asked for one.

Now published on CIO Online: Enterprise IoT: Top-down > Bottom-up

An article by Falkonry’s Sr VP of Products, Greg Olsen, was recently published in CIO Online. The topic? Whether to start an #IoT (Internet of Things) project from the bottom-up, or the top-down.

Greg’s premise is that most companies start from the bottom-up: beginning with the sensors/hardware, building the infrastructure and integration, and then eventually bringing that data and information into the enterprise-level systems. He feels that this approach, although widely used, may not always be the right approach.  IoT is a rapidly changing technology, and for most companies, a project-based (‘top down’) approach might better meet the companies’ goals.

Per Greg: “Your primary challenge today and then, is that the IoT solution ecosystem is still very immature. There is a vast set of rapidly evolving technology building blocks that need to be understood and correctly assembled. There are far too few solution architects and designers who know how to build solutions. Not only do we need more providers due to growing demand, but because of the inherent diversity in IoT solutions, we will require greater specialization among system integrators, VARs, and other solution providers.”

Visual Goodies in Falkonry’s Learning

The learning capabilities of Falkonry can be pretty addictive because they are so visually gratifying. Now to round out that Learning & Monitor interface, we added a few nifty features.

Improved Condition Summary

Increased visual capabilities

 

You can now quickly find out which elements are in a given condition(s) in a given period of time, so that you can navigate directly to those events. A dog-eared pull-out is available on all summary blocks so that you can see which conditions occur in that block of time and which events are in that condition, and for how much of the time. You can select the events you want to investigate further so that you can quickly assess the findings of a condition in a period of time.

This new feature will enable you to evaluate how conditions arise across your data set and what patterns are discovered by Falkonry in that data. When dealing with large numbers of things this feature will improve your ability to inspect Falkonry’s findings without losing context of the overall problem.

Improved Condition Buttons

This works in combination with the condition selections, which we have further simplified by reducing all unlabeled conditions to a circular buttons and user-named conditions to rounded corner rectangular buttons. Additionally, you only see buttons for conditions you are currently looking at. You can always bring in additional condition timelines from the selection panel by choosing old classifications or new verification, etc.

There are other usability improvements that provide you the information you are looking for, removing delays such as:

  • Increased the amount of vertical screen space available for viewing by removing the fixed navigation bar
  • Reduced the lag between creating a pipeline and being able to access the pipeline for learning
  • Added the ability to inspect your data just before starting the learning process
  • Auto-updating of the histories of flow segments and learning in the Configuration view

Analytics Performance Improvement

On top of all these visual improvements, the speed of the analytics was improved so that your model revisions complete faster and with fewer and more understandable errors.

These improvements are iterative steps we’ve taken to increase performance and interoperability. We’ll continue to work on increasing connections to a variety of data sources, providing greater manageability of pipelines, as well as improving the learning and monitoring interfaces. All of this is to improve reliability, performance and intelligence.

Just in! Webcast by Ciner Resources using Falkonry for Predictive Analytics

What’s harder than trying to forecast a deflection point for ore running through a mill?  How about predicting when that downtime or stoppage occurs? That was the challenge of Ciner Resources, out of Green River, Wyoming.

Ciner’s Trona Mine and Processing Plant has a Vertimill that was experiencing unexpected downtime due to lower quality ore grade feed. The Vertimill contributes 65% of the plant’s hourly production. Ciner’s Operations asked OSIsoft and Ciner Engineering to look into historical data and create a preemptive warning for low quality ore grade. The chosen solution used OSIsoft’s PI System and Falkonry’s machine learning software to find ore grade quality indicators upstream of the Vertimill. Ciner then created a warning system that could operationally mitigate or prevent the downtime events.
